Empowering Women Through Skill Development in Fort Kochi, Kerala.
At Devi Women's Collective, we aim to empower women through skill development and entrepreneurship. Our mission is to uplift the community by providing opportunities in the fashion and tailoring industry.
Our nonprofit organisation runs a free 3 month course for women who are interested in starting their own tailoring business. In this course we teach how to sew and the necessary basics of running a small business. Join us in making a difference today!
Our primary objectives is to provide valuable training related to tailoring for women in our community of Fort Kochi. In line with this, we provide free training sessions for women whose aim is to start a small business to sell their tailored items. This endeavour allows us to equip women with essential tailoring and business skills providing them with opportunities they might not have otherwise had.
The Sewing and Fashion Module will be presented by our very own Nowfiya. She is an experienced master tailor and embriodery and crochet expert. She will cover the following topics:
Workshops on colour theory and fashion trends will be offered by local designers in the industry to keep the course current.
Basic business skills will be taught by international volunteers. This will include:
The course will be presented over 12 weeks at Francis Bernard Enclave. The class timetable is as follows:
After completing the course, the women will enter into “The Devi Collective” for the purpose of marketing and selling their handmade items. We are happy to connect the makers to prospective buyers. All the proceeds from any purchase will go directly to the women who makes the items.
Please reach us at devikochi8@gmail.com if you cannot find an answer to your question.
Entering the course is free. However, a fully refundable deposit is required once your spot has been confirmed. There is only space for 8 candidates. Thus, we require those who are interested to submit applications. We will then select the top 8 applicants.
Devi Women's Collective is run through the Volunteering Journeys Organisation by passionate local women and the project is supported by a dedicated team of volunteers from all over the world.
If you are interested in joining the free course you can apply for the next intake on the Join Us page. Please note the eligibility criteria.
If you want to support the project, you can donate or buy the women's handmade products! All the proceeds go directly to them. Visit the Shop tab.
The Devi Women's Collective is based in Fort Kochi, Kerala. Our logo is designed to represent the women of Kochi by firstly including Kochi's colours (yellow and white), and secondly by choosing a shade of pink to symbolise femininity. The design is a one-line drawing which resembles a needle and a thread to link to the sewing and tailoring skills being central to the Devi Collective. The word "Devi" also means "goddess". We believe that our women will be empowered and see themselves like the true goddesses they are in their own right.
We love our customers, so feel free to visit during normal business hours.
